Root Pavilion

ae.i.ou Design Project, 2007

This project proposes a pavilion f0r the Botanic Gardens at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus. The space serves as a porous destination, where students and visitors observe and inhabit the rhizosphere -- the region of soil where roots, fungi and microorganisms interact symbiotically, stimulating growth and nutrient absorption. The Root Pavilion allows students to learn about this essential zone by experiencing a distorted column field that supports mock up roots that hang above the same plants encountered on the ground surface.
